Pace Day Brief: What do you need to know?

What do you need to know about your subject? What's already been done? ( campaign wise) PUMA Presents “peace starts with me” Films AUGUST, 2011 PUMA is proud to present the works of 7 international filmmakers as open content to be shown at the World Peace Festival 2011. “peace starts with me” is a new annual PUMA.Peace commission. This year seven international artists and filmmakers create original works. Curated by PUMA.Creative Chief Curator, Mark Coetzee, and produced by Shooting People, these films encompass a diverse range of styles; including 35mm live action, experimental animation and fine art. Conceived as 30 to 90 second films to facilitate online as well as live screenings, the works are based on the idea that “peace starts with me”. PUMA.Peace commissioned these films under an agreement with the artists that they can openly be downloaded and shown, without any fees, thus acting as ongoing tools for peace—for all. The filmmakers range from world-renowned award-winning artists, to recent graduates; all were selected for the quality and scope of their work and their sensitivity in interpreting this year’s theme. “The goal of our PUMA.Peace initiative is to create programs that foster a more peaceful world than the one we live in today,” said Jochen Zeitz CEO of the Sport & Lifestyle Group, PPR, Paris, France. “Each of us can make a difference in this world as individuals, as corporations and through strategic partnerships. Moreover, at PUMA we feel that we are uniquely positioned to contribute to making the world a better place for generations to come.” Magali Charrier Magali Charrier is an experimental filmmaker and animator and a gruadate from the Royal College of Art in 2010. She juxtaposes live action and animation to investigate the moving body and its failings. “Peace starts with me. Here. My body. Through fragmentation and dislocation, this film explores the body as a place where inner conflicts and tensions are played out. A frenetic collage gives way to a more serene version of the body. Peace comes as a sudden breath born out of chaos.” Let’s dance on Peace Day! One Day One Dance asks you to create a dance event of any scale open to every person and any style of dance. As we begin today a 100-day countdown to the observance, we pay tribute to the many civil society activists who lent the strength of their imagination to the institution of this Day. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1981 that the Day shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. It invited all Member States, the United Nations system, regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, peoples and individuals to commemorate the Day in different ways, especially through all means of education, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the observance of that day. Education, and the fruits of education, have been central to this observance. Young women and men everywhere are demonstrating the power of connection by reaching out to each other, and rallying together, in the common cause of the dignity and human rights to which their peoples aspire. It is in tribute to them, and the spirit they represent, that we have chosen this year, under the overall idea of Peace and Democracy, the theme of “Make your voice heard.” The United Nations stands ready to work with the peoples in whose name the International Day of Peace was established to secure a world ready for, and worthy of, the peace that is essential to all creative human endeavour. Peace Day Mural The Peace Day Mural located between the peace-line gates in Northumberland Street was designed by Springboard, in consultation with young people. Workshops were held with over 100 young people who discussed the International Day of Peace and debated what peace meant to them both visually and through words. This feedback was brought into the design of the mural. The central message of the mural depicts the value of peace and affirms the interdependence of the Shankill and Falls communities as they move forward into the future. The mural was unveiled on 21st September 2011 by journalist, actor and Peace Day Ambassador Ivan Little. In 2001, the United Nations member states unanimously adopted September 21 as Peace Day. Last year’s Peace Day was so successful — there were 88 life-saving activities by 21 organizations across 31 countries — that now Peace One Day is working towards a 2012 Global Truce. With the help of your design and Social Media Week, Peace One Day aims for the largest reduction in global violence in recorded history, both domestically and internationally. In creating your design, think about how a global truce can affect change. A day of peace can bring communities together for a friendly football game, vaccines to children in high conflict areas, and conflict resolution curriculum to schools. The chosen design will be sold on Threadless and 25% of the sale from each tee will benefit the cause. The purpose of this challenge is to create a stand-alone design inspired by the theme, not a brand tee. Your design should not have brand names or logos on it.
